(The Backstory)
Alietran Weyr is set in an alternate history of Pern. The events of the Ninth Pass never happened; the Weyrs never leaped forward in time, so they were never gone to begin with, AIVAS was never discovered, and so life on Pern went on largely the same as it ever had. The Southern Continent was discovered and populated due to ever-rising populations on the Northern Continent, and the Weyrs of Southern and Monaco Bay were founded at roughly the same time as they were in the books. They were soon followed by other Weyrs, smaller than the originals, as the Southern population spread out.
At the end of the 11th Pass, one of Southern Weyr's junior weyrwoman, Aliega of gold Mossyth, left an over-populated Southern in order to found a new Weyr on the Southern Continent. She soon became the new Weyr's Senior Weyrwoman, and after her gold was caught by T'tran's bronze Blitzeth, the Weyrleaders decided to name the new Weyr Alietran. The Weyr grew and thrived over the next two hundred turns and several holds were built up around it to take advantage of the area's rich farmland.
In the 192nd turn of the 11th Interval, the Weyr's Senior Weyrwoman, Eliska, passed away. No one was particularly surprised, as the woman was well into her seventies and had been growing sick for a long time. After the death of her and gold Sirith, however, the Weyr was left under the leadership of the young junior queen Eynalth and her rider, then-eighteen-turn-old Kolyka.
Eynalth had only risen once before, and her flight was handled poorly enough that she was caught by a lowly brown and clutched a pitifully small number of eggs, so the new leadership was not off to a good start. Almost immediately there was talk of transferring in an older, more experienced goldrider, but none of the other Weyrs had queens to spare. In Eynalth's next flight, she was caught by the old Weyrleader, L'cal, and laid a larger but still unremarkable clutch of eighteen eggs. Even before the flight, however, Kolyka has been growing progressively weaker and sicker, and no one was quite sure why. As they had feared, two weeks after the gold laid her clutch, Kolyka died from her illness, leaving a bereaved queen with a clutch that had no queen egg.
The eggs hatched, and nobody could stop Alietran's only queen from going between to join her rider once it was over. The Wingleaders appealed to the neighboring Weyrs of Southern and Ista for a goldrider, but there were still almost ten turns of the Interval left and the queens had not laid any spare golds. Alietran's only options were to either leave and merge with one of the older Weyrs, or find another solution. It was the Weyrleader, L'cal, who had the idea of using greens to provide clutches. There had always been rumors that greens who had never chewed firestone would clutch eggs, though not as many as a queen. Still, it was better than nothing, and he convinced the others to restrict three of the largest and most promising greens from Eynalth's last clutch from chewing firestone.
The first of those three greens to rise was Sitka's green Wapitith. Weyrleader L'cal attempted to ensure that a bronze would win the flight, hoping that Wapitith might lay a queen egg if a bronze caught her, despite being a green. Sitka, however, disagreed, and instead allowed the green to be caught by a blue whose rider was a close friend of hers. Wapitith definitely became pregnant, though, and even before she clutched, the searchriders were sent out to gather candidates for what proved to be the beginning of a new age for Alietran Weyr--and the birth of entirely new colors.
