Things to note: Dragons tend to favor candidates who are the same gender as them, but this is not an absolute. It is most common to see cross-gender Impressions with greens and blues, but female brownriders have happened, and there is a small chance of a bronze Impressing a female in the future. Mutations Impress cross-gender almost as often as they do same-gender. A candidate's sexuality has no effect on what color they Impress.
As for clutching? It is entirely possible for a green or grey to lay a gold. It hasn't happened yet, but it has been observed in fire lizards. The color spread is dependent on the father.
--------------------------------------------------------
Metallics
Color: Gold
Gender: Female
Size: 45-50 feet
Physical Appearance: The largest dragons of all, their bodies are big and bulky, built for power and endurance. Their skin ranges from a pale yellow to deep golden-orange, and they have a metallic sheen to their hide that sets them apart from other dragons, even in the shell.
Personality Traits: The traditional leaders of the Weyr, they have a natural talent of commanding other dragons. They are very maternal and protective of their clutches, and they are naturally domineering and self-confident.
Flights: Rises every 2.5 to 3 turns; cannot chew firestone, so they fight with flamethrowers
Clutching: Clutches 25-40 eggs after every flight with very few duds
Rarity: Extremely Rare
Color: Bronze
Gender: Male
Size: 40-45 feet
Physical Appearance: The largest male dragon, only slightly smaller than the golds, it is they who more often than not catch golds when they rise. Like the queens, they tend to be built more for endurance than agility, and while they can last through an entire fall, they tend to fall behind in green's flights. Their hide is a yellowish-to-orangish bronze, sometimes with green tints, and have the same metallic sheen as golds.
Personality Traits: Bronzes are bold, confident, and charismatic. They are the natural leaders of the dragons and make up the bulk of the wingleaders.
Flights: Chases golds, silvers, purples, sometimes garnets, greys, rarely greens
Clutching: Can sire Metallic and Chromatic colors
Rarity: Rare
Color: Silver
Gender: Female
Size: 32-40 feet
Physical Appearance: Silvers tend to be very slender, thin dragons that are nimble and very flexible in the air, though their endurance is a little better than a green's. The hide is a light to medium grey with a distinct metallic sheen. Their flight and clutching abilities are unknown; as yet, no silver hatched, fire lizard or dragon, has risen. Their bodies reject firestone the same as golds do, however.
Personality Traits: To extrapolate from the fire lizards and one dragon example, silvers are smart and clever, and they often take joy in humor and music. They are surprisingly romantic dragons who highly prefer to mate for life, and it is very likely that they will choose the same male each time they rise.
Flights: Rises every ?? to ?? turns (No silvers have yet risen); cannot chew firestone, so they fight with flamethrowers
Clutching: Unknown
Rarity: Rare
Color: Copper
Gender: Male
Size: 25-33 feet
Physical Appearance: Though they are the size of a green or blue, coppers are built a little more sturdily than the older dragons. They are still built more for speed than strength, but are overall a bit more balanced. The hide is a rich, red to brown-toned copper with the same metallic look as the golds and bronzes.
Personality Traits: Brave and stubborn, they are eager to work and prove themselves, but they do not tend to like change and can be rather mulish. They are known for preferring a single female rather than chasing after any dragon that rises.
Flights: Chases silvers, garnets, greys, greens, rarely purples
Clutching: Can sire Metallic and Chromatic colors
Rarity: Common
--------------------------------------------------------
Iridescents (Also called "Jeweltones")
Color: Beryl
Gender: Male
Size: ?? feet
Physical Appearance: To judge by the fire lizard examples, beryls are extremely large and have particularly long, soaring wings. The hide is a yellow-green base with an iridescent sheen.
Personality Traits: Unknown
Flights: Chases golds; rarely silvers, purples
Clutching: ?? (Can presumably sire Iridescent and Chromatic colors)
Rarity: Unknown (Has yet to appear among dragons)
Color: Onyx
Gender: Male
Size: 32-39 feet
Physical Appearance: Somewhere between blues and browns in size, onyxes tend a bit more towards brown in size and abilities, though not in personality. They are, however, built for endurance and have more than enough strength to last an entire fall, and it's entirely possible for them to participate in queen flights. Their hide can be various shades of black to dark grey with an iridescent sheen.
Personality Traits: Bold and confident, but they are also more aggressive than most dragons and almost overprotective of their riders. They also tend to be loners, but like to be dominant, so can make decent wingseconds or wingleaders.
Flights: Chases silvers, garnets, purples; sometimes greys, greens; rarely golds
Clutching: Can sire Iridescent and Chromatic colors
Rarity: Uncommon
Color: Garnet
Gender: Female
Size: 28-38 feet
Physical Appearance: The first of the new colors to appear, garnets are as large as blues and some of the larger ones are even the size of large browns. Like browns, they are built more for a mix of endurance and speed. The base color is red, but has an iridescent sheen not unlike that of the golds and bronzes. However, this dragon is different from a metallic; its hide shows a full rainbow of colors that shift depending on how the light hits it.
Personality Traits: Passionate and carefree, garnets tend to be playful and very active dragons. They are also excitable and energetic, rarely sitting still. Since they can chew firestone and still clutch, they fly in the regular wings in addition to Rising Tides and it's possible for them to become wingseconds.
Flights: Rises every 1.5 to 2 turns; can chew firestone and still clutch
Clutching: Clutches 6-12 eggs after every flight; about 10% of eggs are duds
Rarity: Uncommon
Color: Pearl
Gender: Neuter, can self-identify as male or female
Size: 18-23 feet
Physical Appearance: The tiniest dragons at Alietran; their small size is more an asset than a liabilty, for they are extremely fast and nimble, perfect for catching stray bits of Thread. Like whites, they don't really have a discernible gender, but will identify as one or the other. Their hide is generally a pale off-white, often with tinges of pink or purple, with the same iridescent layer as other jeweltones.
Personality Traits: Pearls are loving and affectionate dragons. They are very peaceful, almost pacifistic with other dragons and humans, but that won't stop them from flaming thread.
Flights: Does not rise or chase
Clutching: N/A
Rarity: Somewhat uncommon
--------------------------------------------------------
Chromatics
Color: Purple
Gender: Female
Size: 35-42 feet
Physical Appearance: Built to be big and bulky, purples are very strong and have excellent flaming abilities; they serve much the same role as a bronze or brown in Threadfall. They have skin that ranges from a deep lavender to dark purple or violet.
Personality Traits: Characterized by their bravery and recklessness in battle. They outright refuse to fly in the queen's wing and demand to chew firestone so they can be in the thick of the action. This is a trait that is expected to be shared among all purples.
Flights: Rises every 1.5 to 2 turns; insists on chewing firestone, so no clutches
Clutching: N/A
Rarity: Uncommon
Color: Brown
Gender: Male
Size: 35-40 feet
Physical Appearance: Browns are middling in size but still built more towards endurance than speed. Their smaller size means that they rarely out-fly bronzes in order to mate with queens. The hide ranges from a light tan to a dark chocolate brown and anything in between; they lack the metallic sheen of their larger siblings, though.
Personality Traits: Calm and level-headed, they are steady, hard-working types that can be good leaders or followers. They make up the bulk of wingseconds.
Flights: Chases silvers, garnets, purples, greys, greens; sometimes golds
Clutching: Can sire Metallic, Iridescent, and Chromatic colors
Rarity: Uncommon
Color: Grey
Gender: Female
Size: 27-34 feet
Physical Appearance: Female dragons the size of a blue or large green, they function much the same as greens within the weyr. They are fast and agile dragons and can protect the larger dragons from smaller pieces of Thread. Their hide is noticably darker than a silver's and lacks the metallic sheen; the shade ranges from a middling grey to almost charcoal.
Personality Traits: Quiet and mild-mannered, they are calm and stable dragons but tend to be somber and serious as well. They are seldom more maternal than greens, really, and just don't have the same instincts towards eggs that golds do.
Flights: Rises every 1 to 1.5 turns or more; chewing firestone renders them completely infertile
Clutching: Clutches 8-16 eggs no more than once per turn; Usually about 40% to 70% of eggs are duds
Rarity: Common
Color: Blue
Gender: Male
Size: 30-35 feet
Physical Appearance: The smallest of the classic male dragons, unlike their brown and bronze brothers, blues are built for speed and agility rather than strength and endurance. This means they have no chance of catching a queen, but they often end up mates of greens or greys. They can range in color from a light cyan blue to deep midnight blue with tinges of green or purple to their hide.
Personality Traits: Extroverted and friendly, they are easy-going and non-confrontational, generally. They like to be around people and make excellent searchdragons.
Flights: Chases silvers, garnets, greys, greens; sometimes purples
Clutching: Can sire Metallic, Iridescent, and Chromatic colors
Rarity: Common
Color: Orange
Gender: Male
Size: 23-27 feet
Physical Appearance: Oranges are very small dragons, on average the size of a green, but can get even smaller. Like many other chromatics, they are thin and nimble dragons, built for speed and accuracy of their flames. Their hides are often bright and range from a light golden orange to a deep pumpkin or red-orange.
Personality Traits: Shy and timid, they are skittish and easily startled. Can be clumsy, and often require extra attention from the Weyrlingmaster during training. They can be sweet and understanding as well, though, and they are common enough that there are almost certainly some that break the stereotype.
Flights: Chases garnets, greys, greens; rarely silvers
Clutching: Can sire Metallic, Iridescent, and Chromatic colors
Rarity: Very Common
Color: Green
Gender: Female
Size: 25-30 feet
Physical Appearance: The smallest dragons of them all, until the pearls arrived, they are also the most common, though they no longer make up a full fifty percent of the dragon population. They are slender and agile in build and are good fliers, though they lack the endurance of the larger colors and usually have to be switched out in the middle of threadfall. Their hides range from a light minty green to a deep forest green, sometimes with tinges of yellow or blue as well.
Personality Traits: Gregarious and outgoing, greens have a reputation as flirts, though not all of them live up to it. They also make excellent searchdragons. They have little to no maternal instincts, however, and a large number of their eggs are duds.
Flights: Rises every 1 to 1.5 turns or more; chewing firestone renders them completely infertile
Clutching: Clutches 12-24 eggs no more than once per turn; Usually about 50% to 80% of eggs are duds
Rarity: Very Common
Color: White
Gender: Neuter, can self-identify as male or female
Size: 18-22 feet
Physical Appearance: Whites are always extremely small dragons that are dwarfed even by greens. They are known to be extremely fast and agile, though, and they also have a reputation for being especially gifted at betweening to different times, though it's not confirmed as more than legend. They don't have a discernible gender and do not feel the need to mate. They have a white hide, though sometimes tinges of other colors can be seen on the hide as well.
Personality Traits: Intelligent and curious by reputation, but whites also seem to be much more solitary than most dragons. Only a handful have ever hatched, so very little is known about them. The last white to be hatched on Pern went between in old age about twenty turns ago.
Flights: Does not rise or chase
Clutching: N/A
Rarity: Extremely Rare (None alive on Pern at present)
These are the colors that have hatched at Alietran, or that the weyrfolk have reason to believe could hatch. It is possible that other colors may appear that haven't been discovered yet--if so, their information will be added as well.
