Physical Appearance:
Akand is a spare, lean man with the look of someone who has been out working in the elements for most of his life. His skin is tanned and rough with exposure to sun and wind, matching the work-rough calluses on the palms of his hands. Those hands, if beginning to weaken a bit, are still ungnarled- steady and sure enough to turn to net repair, fish dressing, or any task that needs doing. There’s plenty of wiry muscle left to support that thin frame, and Akand’s stamina has left many a young man humbled and impressed (even if he has to go soak his muscles for a few days afterward).
Akand’s hair is a wispy, steel gray that covers his head and neck, and his eyes a light brown. He has a thin face with high, sharp cheekbones and a similar type of nose.
Personality:
No one has ever found Akand without a smile on his face. He can give the same unruffled smile to a hated enemy as to a trusted old friend, and always keeps a packet of sweets on his person to offer to children and adults alike. The man can find something to enjoy or amuse him in every situation, which frequently annoys less sunny personalities around him. Akand has a very hands-on management style, and now leaves much of the day-to-day administrative work of running the hold in the hands of his eldest children in favor of catching up with new projects or old friends. His folk find him enthusiastic about everything, but it’s clear that behind the cheerful curiosity lies an intent to succeed in his business. He’s generous to those who are good to him, but those who betray his trust find themselves left high and dry in a hurry.
Of a piece with rest of his personality, Akand is a meddler. Oh, he’s not a heavy player in politics among the holds, but his inquisitiveness, experience, and subtle touch have gained him a reputation as the one to talk to for lesser-known information or before launching any major political maneuvers. Of course, his informational net –made up of family, friends, and people for whom he’s done a few favors over the Turns- helps, and is often employed to his own benefit.
Akand is a staunch and lifelong supporter of the Weyr and dragonriders in general, in a practical sort of way. It’s to his hold’s benefit to support them, and a number of his children have been Searched and Impressed.
History:
Akand was born the third son of Lord Minfern of Arnus Hold, the first child of his second marriage. With his eldest brother, Cavry, as Heir, and the next oldest, Zarix, slated to be his Steward, Akand had a pretty relaxed childhood. He did well at his lessons, but wasn’t overly remarkable in his studies, and exhibited a healthy spirit of curiousity at he spent much of his time exploring the Hold- too often, in areas he wasn’t supposed to be into.
When Akand hit twelve, nothing else would do but that he got out on the water with the seacrafters. He hung around the docks often enough that one of the ships finally took him on, and he worked his way up for the next few years. Akand was never prouder than when he earned his journeyman knots at 23, and specialized in navigation.
Akand’s thirtieth year was a busy one. Minfern died and Cavry duly succeeded him. Akand, still grieving his father’s death, received command of his own fishing vessel, The Moon Tracker, shortly thereafter.
Three years later, Zarix died of a sudden and devastating illness. His brother’s death left Akand concerned- what if something happened to Cavry and he had to take the Hold? He began spending more time on land, studying with the replacement Steward to familiarize himself with Hold matters he had previously ignored. He was probably more overjoyed than the proud parents when Cavry’s wife had her son, Vysos, two years later- freeing him to do what he loved best.
Unfortunately, he cheered too soon. When Akand was 38, Cavry, his wife, and Vysos died in a boating accident when they went out sailing for Vysos’ second birthday. So Akand had to become Lord Holder, giving up his precious Tracker to his second. That first Turn was a chaotic one, as Akand put in long hours to learn the finer details of Hold management and sought to solidify his reputation among his new peers.
Part of Akand’s efforts included his marriage to one of Fort’s daughters. Lady Zhisto not only strengthened Arnus’ trade links to the north, but also brought with her a highly develop business acumen and charming personality that served the Hold more locally as well. The couple also had ten children together before Zhisto’s death, nine of which are still living. During their tenure as Lord and Lady, Akand and Zhisto expanded Arnus’ holdings and brought the Hold to a comfortable prosperity.
Zhisto’s death devastated Akand, who considered her the most able and caring spouse a man could hope to have. He surprised most of Pern (and scandalized its most conservative members) by naming his eldest illegitimate son, master seacrafter Dakis, as Heir of Arnus Hold. His legitimate sons seemed fine with it, one gladly pursuing his love of Running and two more responding to Search from Alietran, so Akand isn’t fussing himself too much over it.

Jib is possibly one of the most laid-back fire-lizards on the planet. Akand’s children gave his egg to their father to be a companion after their mother’s death and Jib fills this role splendidly. Most often found lazing on Akand’s shouler or sunning himself, this brown appreciates the good things in life.
