Rain, Rain, Go Away (Wapitith's Touching)

"I am getting sick of rain," Sitka muttered as she sat beside Wapitith and the eggs. The shells were getting quite hard now, and Sitka figured the hatching wouldn't be far away now.

At least there's no thunder, Wapitith pointed out drowsily, having just woken up from a nap. She carefully nosed the dark blue-green egg as if testing it, and then stared at her clutch for a bit in thought. The eggs are hard now. We should have a Touching soon, shouldn't we?

Sitka shrugged. "I suppose there's not much else for the candidates to be doing, with all this rain. Call them in, and you better let Zanira and Xerith know what's going on too, so they can help supervise."

Candidates! Report to the Hatching Sands please, you will be allowed to touch the eggs. Xerith, please tell yours to come as well.

Once the candidates were assembled, Sitka went ahead and went over the basic rules. "Okay, listen up. Wapitith has decided to let you touch her eggs. Still, even though the shells have hardened, be careful with them, which means no roughhousing around the clutch. Try to touch all the eggs--there's only five, so that shouldn't be difficult--and get a feel for what's inside them. Living, breathing, helpless and confused dragons will come from these once they hatch, and they'll be looking for their riders. Line up behind Wapitith once you've finished."

After a pause to let the Candidatemaster add anything she wanted to say, Sitka nodded her head and stepped back, signaling the candidates to come forward and start the Touching.


The Grimm Tales Clutch



1. Magic Mirror Egg
This egg is as smooth and shiny as a mirror. Completely white with just a hint of a bluish-green shade, it appears to nearly glow next to the rest of the eggs. Its surface is completely smooth and a bit cool to the touch, and the egg gives off a feeling of cool disdain.

2. Shuddering Egg
This egg is a light blue with hints of cyan. It is also liberally speckled with yellow spots of color. It's one of the smaller eggs and is easily overshadowed by its larger neighbors, but the egg seems to twitch a lot more than the others, as though the dragon inside is impatient to get out. As soon as it is touched, however, it settles down and goes silent.

3. Juniper Tree Egg
This egg is a dark green-blue color, and middling in size. It has a silvery sheen to the shell and the only marking is a large irregular blotch of red near the top of the shell. It doesn't respond much to touch, only occasionally emanating a faint sense of grief.

4. Silent Secret Egg
Clearly the largest egg in the clutch, this egg is a striking red-orange color. It's nearly yellow near the bottom of the shell and gradually fades to a deep red color at the top. There's a shiny iridescence on the shell as well; it almost seems to change color whenever the light hits it. The egg is calm and quiet, but exudes a sense of friendly curiosity when touched.

5. Glass Slipper Egg
This egg is a deep blue that's nearly black, and nearly solid in color. The shell has a few streaks of a lighter forest green, but otherwise it doesn't really stand out in any way. This egg seems unimpressed with everything around it, and rarely responds to anyone who touches it. When it does react, it seems to want to push everyone away and be left by itself.

Akira jumped once again when she heard the voice of another dragon inside her head. This is getting annoying. She wasn't really sure she would ever get used to dragon's putting their words inside her head whenever they wanted. She sighed and moved away from the window she had been looking out of. It was still raining, and had been for a long while now.

Akira made her way down to the hatching sands and listened as Sitka explained the rules for the Touching. She nodded and slowly made her way to the Magic Mirror Egg. The egg had caught her attention because of it's shiny surface. She knelt down the extremely small egg, and ran a gentle hand over it's smooth surface. She squinted at the egg when she felt a feeling of disdain. She wasn't sure why she was feeling that way, but she shook her head, and moved on to the next egg.

Akira knelt down next to the Juniper Tree Egg. It had caught her attention because of the strange, red marking on it's side. Akira gently ran her hand over the dark green/blue shell. She ran a careful finger over the dark red marking, and felt a strange sense of grief as she did so. She felt like taking the egg in her arms, and cradling it until that strange grief went away. She knew that probably wasn't the best idea in the world, so instead of doing what she wanted to do, she picked herself up, and went on to the next egg.

Akira smiled as she placed her hand on the shell of the Silent Secret Egg. The egg was the largest of the clutch and Akira really liked the way it the redish-orange blended in with the yellow. It really was her favorite egg when it came to looks. She smiled and gently rubbed the shell of the egg, feeling a sense of friendly curiousity coming from the egg. I can't wait to see what comes from you. The thought was directed to the egg, but anything that was probing into her head would have heard her thought.

Akira smiled, and moved on to the Glass Slipper Egg. The nearly solid blue egg was her second favorite when it came to looks. She almost laughed at herself as she compaired this egg, with the one she had touched before it. She wanted to slap herself for even attempting to do that. She shook her head and pushed those thoughts out of her head. She frowned when she felt the egg trying to push her away. She tilted her head to the side a little, and wondered why it wanted to be by itself.

Akira shook her head, and gave the egg what it wanted. She left it alone, and moved over to the only egg she hadn't touched yet. That was the Shuddering Egg. She watched as the little egg twitched, and seemed impatient to break free. Don't worry little one, you'll be free soon enough. She smiled and gently ran her hand over the small egg's shell. She almost giggled out loud when the egg stopped twitching. She smiled, and wished she could sit there, and rub the egg's blue, green, and yellow shell all day, but knew she couldn't.

Akira knew that the other candidates had to touch the egg , so she sighed and regerettibly moved from the egg. She moved over and stood where she had been told to stand, waiting to see what would happen next. She kept her attention on the clutch, watching to see how the other candidates would react to the eggs.

'Zanira, Wapitith has asked us to report to the sands. The touching has started and the children must be supervised'

The soft tones of Xerith slipped into her thoughts, drawing her attention away from the paper work that she was leaning over at her table. A smile spread over her lips as she pushed her work to one side, stepped away from her table, and tucked her hands into her pockets as she made her way toward the hatching sands. The first step onto the heated sands caused a cascade of emotions to run through her as she remembered Xerith's hatching all those years ago, and for a moment she basked in those memories before remembering her manners and bowing to Wapitith. Once that was done she moved to one side and waved the candidates toward her as they started arriving, sure Sitka had already given some rules as to what was going on, but she wandered to add a few of her own.

"Okay candidates today is the day you've been looking forward to, you are actually going to get to touch the eggs. But before we do that I would like to further tell you about what is expected of you today, after all I'm sure Wapitith will not enjoy badly behaved candidates among her eggs" She paused to make sure that everyone was paying attention to her before continuing "I would like everyone of you to give Wapitith her due thanks for letting you be here by bowing to her, and once you have done that you may approach the eggs. As Sitka has already said you need to be careful in your actions around the eggs, and try to touch each of them for at least a few moments"

Her hands lowered to rest on her hips as she searched for anything else that she should say, and for a moment it seemed as it she had nothing more to say. Of course, as always Zanira always had something more to add "Oh and seeing as there is more candidates then eggs I ask that there be only one candidate per egg, so do try and not stay at one egg for too long" She felt bad for ruining the fun of the touching, but she didn't want to subject one person on one egg for too long as she was sure that Wapitith would only allow the candidates on the sands for a short time before growing bored of their presence.

Smiling she waved the candidates forward, she had nothing more to say to them and she didn't want to hold them up any longer. Once free of the youngsters she made her way over to Sitka and Wapitith "It's a beautiful clutch you two have, I do hope my candidates give it the reverence it deserves this day"

Berengar was taking advantage of the rain to flirt with one of the younger workers in the kitchens, but he dropped her like a piece of hot coal once he heard the green mother's message. He raced away, leaving a most disgruntled young woman behind to gripe about men and their fickle ways.

Berengar didn't hear, and wouldn't have cared anyway if he had heard. He had more important things to think about, like the eggs. The only thing he looked forward to more than the Touching was the Hatching itself.

He listened as both Sitka, the green's rider, and Zanira, the candidate master, explained the rules. It was all nothing he hadn't heard before, and he stared longingly at the eggs while they talked. Finally, Zanira finished, and they were allowed to approach the clutch.

Berengar bowed shallowly to the green, who seemed more bemused than anything at the respect being shown to her. Perhaps, being a green, she hadn't expected to be greeted the same way as a queen. Still, she accepted the bows graciously and stepped back from her eggs. She must have been feeling protective today, for she twitched her tail impatiently whenever the eggs were touched, as if she wanted to chase the candidates away, but otherwise she made not a sound.

Naturally, Berengar gravitated toward the large red egg in the center of the clutch. There was a curious iridescence on the shell's surface he wasn't sure he'd seen on an egg before. He paid little attention to it, though. He was greeted with a sense of curiosity as he put one hand on the large egg, and he smiled. The dragon inside seemed like a friendly creature; hopefully it would feel the same way about him. He thought he might get along quite well with the dragon that came from that egg.

Unfortunately, there were other candidates waiting for their turn, and a little reluctantly, Berengar stepped away to give someone else a chance. He went next to the Shuddering egg, but he felt nothing from the dragon inside. He frowned, and rapped lightly on the shell to get a response, but nothing happened. Wapitith growled softly in warning, though, and he left that egg alone before he upset the mother more.

He had to wait his turn to touch the Juniper Tree egg, though even when he did so, he felt no response from the egg, and with a shrug, he went on to the next, the largish, dark blue egg. No response from this one either, though Berengar felt like the dragonet inside was deliberately ignoring him this time, and he gave a snort and shrugged.

The last egg in this small clutch was the Magic Mirror egg, the smallest egg with the shiny white shell. He wondered what would hatch from the egg. A green? A blue? Maybe even a rare white, like the ones he had read about? The egg seemed to give off a feeling of disdain when he touched it, and Berengar scowled. "Not a very friendly bunch of eggs, are they?" he muttered. He hoped more than ever that the dragon in the large red egg chose him, since he didn't think he'd Impress otherwise. Having touched all the eggs now, he shrugged again and went to stand with the rest of the candidates who had finished already.

Aela headed to the Sands. A Touching! She bowed the the Green who's eggs were on the Sands and then went and to her first egg. The egg she chose to visit first was the Glass Slipper Egg. It seemed to call out to her the most and Alea wanted to meet it first. What did the egg hold? All Aela had to do was wait.

[Night]

Tai and Freya weren't far behind the others. The two candidates slipped in behind Aela and bowed to the green. She may not be a Gold, but the dragoness still deserved some respect. After all, they might actually be impressing one of them. Moving to the first of the eggs, Tai was the first of the two "siblings" to touch it. It was the Magic Mirror Egg. The little egg was different, and though it wasn't the first one either of them had ever touched, it certainly didn't blend into the lengthy list. It was sweet almost, at least until you actually touched it, then it was cold.

Next up was the Shuddering Egg, it was scared it seemed. Freya touched that one first, and the shell stopped immidiately. Was that because it was afraid even more? Or was it that it had calmed? Unsure, Freya moved away and let Tai touch it only to recieve much the same reaction. A shy dragonet would probably come from it he decided. The next egg, Juniper Tree, was gried striken. Freya thought of her mother, and her death. It hadn't really hit her till now, after all she had never actually known the woman closely. Shaking her head and blinking fast to not allow any tears, the candidate moved on and let Tai try. However, the boy only let his fingers slide quickly against the shell. If it upset his "sister' that much, he wouldn't even try.

Two more left now, Silent Secret was the one Freya went to, and Tai went to the Glass Slipper Egg. Freya liked hers, at least this one seemed sort of friendly. Out of the entire clutch it seemed to be the nicest. Though, that only meant that it didn't seem to have issues. She could deal with issues of course, but the 19 turn old had been dealing with her "siblings' " issues for turns. At Tai's egg, he only seemed to be pushed away. This was such an odd clutch, did they not wish to be with someone? This one was pushing people away, the first was cold, the others were frightened or shy. "Don't you know you all have nothing to fear little ones?"

Taking a moment though, the candidate suddenly had a thought. Perhaps the eggs were really reflecting on the Weyr's and candidates' thoughts and feelings? What did that mean then? They couldn't know that he.....no, because he wasn't. Putting his own worries away, Tai moved off the sands with his "sister".

Seana stood back as she listened to Zanira and Sitka, taking in the rules of the touching and letting out a sigh of delight. Rules where a large part of her life and she took each of them to heart as she carefully stepped toward the clutch, her body tipping forward into a bow as she showed her gratitude to Wapitith. She stayed there for a moment before lifting her body, smiling to the green and her rider, and then walking toward the nearest egg that didn't have a candidate standing near it at that moment. That egg happened to be the Juniper Tree Egg and she found herself biting her lip as she rested her hand upon the surface of the egg, her eyes partially closing as she tried to get a reading of the dragon within the green-blue shell.

She stayed there for a moment, but the only sensation she felt was the very faint sense of grief. Seana wasn't sure what the developing dragon had to grieve over, after all it hadn't even hatched yet, and she found herself worrying about the young creature as she ran her hand over the shell. A glance to her side told her that another candidate was waiting to touch the egg, so she smiled down at the egg as she spoke to the egg "Don't be sad little one, there will be someone here that will help you forget your grief I am sure" her voice was soft as she removed her hand from the shell, turned to nod at the waiting candidate, and moved toward the next free egg which was the Magic Mirror Egg.

A few steps wher taken before she was close enough to trail her hand along it's surface, her eyes partially closed as she drank in the feelings of the egg. At first she didn't feel anything from the egg, but then after a few moments she got the distinct sensation of disdain from the egg. A frown crossed her face as she wondered what was wrong with this clutch to earn such sad emotion from them, and she let out a faint sigh as she slipped her hand from the egg. She didn't know what to say to the egg, and someone was already approaching to have their turn with the egg. So she stepped away and moved on to the next egg which was the Silent Secret Egg.

The moment she laid her hand over the large egg she felt the sensation of curiosity. She found herself laughing softly at the sensation of the emotion, and she felt delighted that at least one of the eggs was happy about it's lot in life. Smiling the young teen found herself humming softly to the egg, her eyes partially closed as she basked in the sensation of the curious mind that she felt within the egg. Changing a glance up from the egg she spotted the next egg on her list of eggs to visit, and she continued her humming as she walked toward the Shuddering Egg.

The light blue egg was warm to the touch, and she was sure that she could feel the egg twitch as she touched it. There seemed to be a sense of impatience about the mind within the egg, as if the baby within it wanted to hatch at that very moment! Spilling it's body over the sand while yelling to the world that it was here and ready to explore the world. She chuckled and shook her head "patience, your time will come for you to see the world soon enough" she smiled once last time and left to make her way to the last egg.

The Glass Slipper Egg didn't really stand out at all well, and as soon as she touched it she could feel that the egg was unimpressed with her. It even exuded the feeling that it just wanted her to leave it alone, so she took her hand away from the egg. Linking her hands behind her back Seana walked across the sands until she was stood behind Wapitith, her eyes watching the candidates that where still taking their time with the eggs.

Banalii jumped at the sound of the voice in her head. She dashed into the Hatching Sands. And carefully and quietly approached the eggs, looking at them. They were marvelous and beautiful. She had never seen anything like these beautiful eggs. She bowed respectfully to the clutch mother. "They are beautiful..." she breathed aloud, though not to anyone in particular.


She walked to the nearest egg. It was the Glass Slipper Egg. The nearly all dark blue or black egg with just some darker green streaks on it. It was reflective and beautiful. The egg didn't seem to want to be touched. It was like it was pushing her away. She frowned. She wasn't particularly attracted to this egg. Not this one.

She stayed there for a moment longer then moved to the next egg. She wanted to save the large one for last. That is why she moved to the next. It was the Juniper Tree Egg that came next. She very gently placed a hand on it and felt the weight of grief. She felt it weigh on her heart and she could not help but gently stroke the shell in a comforting gesture. "It'll get better... The world isn't so dark..." she whispered, hoping her words would come true for the little one inside.

She moved on to the Magic Mirror Egg. The egg seemed to be looking down on the world around it, or at least disdain for those who touched it. She frowned. That wasn't particularly a feeling she liked having on her. "Well... little one, you will be an interesting hatchling." She moved on again, more quickly this time.

The Shuddering Egg was next. The light blue egg seemed to settle down almost as soon as she touched it. She grinned. An eager dragon. It was great to feel the eagerness to hatch of this little one. "Well, it's coming soon..." She moved on to the last egg.

The shiny, large, red and orange Silent Secret Egg. This one had looked the most impressive from a distance and it was equally as beautiful up close. It was friendly and curious... And stable. She smiled. She really wondered what would hatch from this egg.

She spent a little bit more time there then slowly walked back towards the others, thinking about dragonets and their personalities, even still within the confines of their eggs.
