As soon as Sitka got the message that said the Weyrhealer wanted to talk to her, she left her weyr and made her way to the Infirmary. They were into the third week since the Hatching, and tensions--and tempers--were higher than ever. She dearly hoped they would be able to put an end to this quarantine soon.
The healer looked up as she entered the Infirmary. By now, most of the poisoning victims had recovered fully or almost so; only Lord Kalgar and one or two other very bad cases of poisoning were still confined, and even they were starting to get restless, from what she had heard. The Weyrhealer headed to his private office and gestured for her to follow him. "Please tell me you've figured something out," she said as soon as they were alone.
He sighed. "Yes, but I don't think you're going to like it. I finally finished going over my notes about Weyrwoman Kolyka's illness. I'm now almost certain the cause was fireroot poisoning."
So they did have a murderer on their hands. Great. "What took you so long to figure this out?" She scowled.
"I've been busy, in case you haven't noticed," the healer said, nodding toward the patients. "It's been over two turns since her death, I was lucky to find the notes at all."
"Why did you recognize the symptoms now, but not when it happened?" Sitka asked.
The healer gave a shrug. "Fireroot is a very uncommon way to kill someone. In order for Kolyka to not notice the taste of the fireroot, it would have had to be given in very small doses over a long period in her food or drink. The poison made it impossible for her to keep down anything she consumed, and she essentially starved to death."
Sitka shuddered. Faranth, that sounded like a terrible way to go. The healer continued, "Anyway, due to the unusual cause of death, it's almost a certainty the poisoning at the Feast was done by the same person. You can go ahead and send the guests home now; it's clear Kolyka was murdered by someone in the Weyr. Someone who has been here for at least two or three turns."
The greenrider cursed under her breath. She had kind of been hoping it had been the work of an outsider. This meant the poisoner was quite possibly someone she knew, maybe even a friend. At least they could open the Weyr back up to travel now, though she feared the damage to the Weyr's relations was already done. Some of the guests seemed on the edge of revolt as it was, and they still didn't know who the poisoner was. "Have you talked to L'cal about this as well? Do you have any suspects?"
The healer shrugged. "I told L'cal pretty much the same thing. As for suspects, not much. Lord Kalgar seems to have an allergic reaction to the fireroot; that's why he had the strongest reaction to it, and it may be why the poisoner chose the method they did. Considering Kolyka was his daughter, it seems someone is targeting the family. But you know what it's like before a Hatching; the cooks are anxious for all the help they can get. Anyone could have pitched in to help and slipped the poison into the soup while it was cooking. A cook, a worker, a candidate, a rider--"
"No dragon would choose someone capable of murder!" Sitka exclaimed.
The healer smiled. "My dear greenrider, everyone is capable of murder, with the proper motive."

Sitka was back in her weyr, oiling Wapitith, when L'cal found her. "Stupid, shaffing, healer!" She looked up at his appearance, but didn't pay much attention to his rantings. "Couldn't keep his mouth shut! It's all over the Weyr by now, Kolyka's murder and everything. Some of the guests have already left, even though nothing was announced yet. Everyone knows what happened."
The greenrider shrugged. "They're no longer suspects. Let them go." She smiled as she suddenly got an idea. "And if everyone knows now, everyone can help find the culprit. Ask for help, offer a reward to anyone who can give us information leading to the killer."
The Weyrleader nodded slowly. "I don't particularly like it...but it might work." He scowled again. "I still want to fire that healer, though. Send him back to the Healer Hall, have them send someone who can actually keep their mouth shut this time."
"I believe that falls under my jurisdiction, as temporary Weyrwoman," Sitka said dryly.
"Well, you fire him, then!"
She sighed. "I don't entirely disagree with you on that, L'cal, but I'm not going to send the Healer Hall someone who may well be a murderer."
That stopped him, and he seemed thoughtful. "You think?"
She shrugged. "He does seem to know all about fireroot, and it seemed a little suspicious the way he didn't recognize the symptoms until the Feast happened. Either he was behind it, or he's just incompetent. Either way, I'll write to the Healer Hall once this is all sorted out. In the meantime, I'll get the word out. People can come talk to me if they have any suspicions."
L'cal grumbled a reply, but soon left, leaving Sitka alone with Wapitith once again. "How did it come to this?" she muttered.
Wapitith crooned. Don't worry, Mine. This will all be over soon.

(OOC)
Okay, now for the interactive part. News of Sitka's conversation with the healer has spread all over the Weyr. You can reply to this thread in Sitka's weyr with any character who has suspicions. You may also start new threads to investigate, and I may post an event in it to uncover clues, as well as play any NPCs who need played. Any character who comes to Sitka and points the finger at the correct killer will earn a reward once they're caught. (I'm definitely open to suggestions for what that reward could be.)
