Name: Kaisys
Pronunciation: KEYE-sihs
Gender: Male
Age: 19
Birthdate (Season): Midsummer
Location: Alietran Weyr
Rank: Journeyman Beastcrafter
Wing: N/A
Family:
Physical Appearance: Kaisys leans against the term 'androgynous' with both feet on the masculine side. He's too curved and soft-looking to seem chiselled, and at just shy of six feet tall he's too big to seem feminine. He is thoroughly muscled but not muscular, and he can travel all day but only sprint a short distance. Overall, everything about him seems just a little too long and willowy to seem strong, and yet he only asks for help if he needs company - and it doesn't take long to realize that he's shameless rather than proud.
Kai's dark, reddish-brown hair makes for quite a contrast against his stubbornly pale skin. He really doesn't tan, but fortunately he doesn't burn horrendously either. The odd freckle dots his back and shoulders, but smooth, pale scars are by far more common. Those are scattered freely across his limbs, congregating somewhat around joints, and, for some reason, his temples. None of his scars impede movement or cause pain, so he doesn't worry about them.
The strangest thing about Kaisys' face is that his eyes are difficult to label grey or brown. There really isn't a lot of colour to them, and since his sister Ninera has blue eyes, either is possible. Grey or brown, they are fairly narrow and only lightly framed with dark lashes. The eyebrows above are equally thin, and against a darker skin tone would be nigh invisible. As it is, their shadow is visible along the curve of his brow. The rest of his face is rather feminine, and if that were all someone saw, it is understandable that they might mistake him for a somewhat masculine woman.
His face is one thing. His dress… entirely different. People have choked upon catching sight of him. It is even more understandable than them temporarily thinking his face that of a female. See, when he isn't working with his beloved canines, Kaisys likes colour. Red in particular, although his wardrobe works its way though the rainbow. He is also a fan of trailing sleeves, loose necks, and billowing fabric decorated with embroidery and occasionally beads. Kai's general non-working clothing is about as showy as a lot of people's Gather wear. He rather likes the effect on others. He doesn't, however, wear such gaudy materials while working. Then he sticks to a leather vest and trousers and not much else. He finds bare feet have better grip than boots, so he goes unshod while in cultivated areas.
Personality: Kaisys is cheerfully flamboyant, absently romantic, and only mildly obsessive. He doesn't get worked up about much but is passionate about pretty much everything. Every day is a good day, even one in the middle of a poisoner-induced lockdown (which he fortunately missed), almost everyone deserves a second chance (unless they're a dog-hater, in which case they don't even get a first, thanks to his canine obsession and very mild vindictive streak), and any situation can be improved.
Kaisys really doesn't care if people think he's odd or crazy. He likes having fun, and it isn't as if he ever does anything that weird. He regularly paints his emotions on his forehead in neon colours and dances out their tune while drumming the music against whatever's nearby. Wait, that's mixing metaphor and reality. He does not literally paint himself. He doesn't like paint. It's messy and gets everywhere, and then takes ages to get off. He does show what he's feeling. He doesn't bottle anything or hide his feelings. Everyone gets to see them, whether or not they want to. If he's in a particularly good mood and has the energy (not necessarily the same thing), he may indeed start dancing. When he dances, he really doesn't hold back. And he likes being part of a group, so he might occasionally wander off to the side, grab some random person, and drag them out to dance. More frequently he taps the beat of his muse on something handy, such as his leg or a dog's back. A lot of the time he doesn't even realize he's doing it.
Now, don't be offended if Kaisys seems to be star-crossed. He falls in love regularly and widely. He always seems to be totally in love, and then he'll drift away and forget. Not that the person exists - no, just that he was supposed to be in love. He doesn't do it on purpose. He just feels very strongly and goes over the top at first, but his romantic attention span is similar to the life of an insect on a log in the middle of the ocean. Before he wanders off and drowns, though, he'll provide the works: breakfast in bed if appropriate, flowers scrounged from somewhere or other, random gifts, and once a firelizard egg.
When it comes to confrontations, Kai's reaction depends entirely on what species the confrontation is with. He's a wimp when it comes to people and fists but can wrestle a biting dog to the ground without flinching. Felines, even pelts, make him twitchy and paranoid and jump at every sound and shadow. It may take some practice for him to be able to stand up to a dragon, but he can work with firelizards much the same as a canine, and his blue Sheft is incredibly well trained, so there is plenty of hope if he stays in the Weyr. What difference is there between firelizards and dragons, after all, excepting size and language? It's easier to teach manners to something that speaks the same words.
He makes a very happy and uninhibited drunk, and can't hold his liquor. At all. His father once commented sadly that of course his only son would be the least tolerant of all his offspring. His sisters last longer than he does. He gets distracted by pretty faces halfway into a glass or mug and forgets to go back for it. He isn't quite promiscuous when he's sober, although he's friendly to everyone and it can come across as flirting if someone involves wants it to, and when he's drunk he tends to slur too much to make any offensive proposals. At least he doesn't lose his balance until his third or fourth dose.
All in all, Kaisys is quite happy with his life. He makes friends easily and isn't afraid to go forcibly make some more, no matter where he is, so loneliness is never an issue. And if he's travelling, he usually has at least one dog, not to mention Sheft. He has a purpose: to continue to improve his family's dogs and encourage their use throughout the Southern Continent. He generally has access to food and drink and all that good stuff, so why should he need to worry about anything? No, for Kaisys, life is good.
History: [OOC note: I'm going to attempt to avoid ending up with another novella like Keluute. Let's see how this goes.]
Kaisys is the third of four children born of the first wife of the Master Beastcrafter Kaininer, who is also the master of the holding Kaligi. The original hold was in southern Keroon, but the canine lines were all transported south in that mad rush that now seems distance history. Kaininer's first wife, Syssera, died in childbirth when Kaisys was nine. Within the Turn, he had remarried. Elittra bore him three more children, but Kaisys remained the only son. Kaininer stopped at seven living offspring; Syssera's final had also been female, but had not survived the birth either.
All of the children grew up around canines, very large canines, but the first two daughters, Syssai and Kainiera, were far more obsessed with music and were delighted to be able to able to apprentice at the Harper Hall when they were both old enough; the two were inseparable. Syssai eventually specialized in drums, and taught some of the craft to Kaisys, as did Kainiera and her talent with voice. The drums stuck rather more than the voice, but Kaisys never had any intention of leaving his home for the Hall. He liked the dogs too much.
The solution for that, then, was for him to apprentice to his father and learn the basics, and then ship away to continue under another, less biased Master. That's exactly what he did. It took a bit of doing to find a Master with similar interests, so he settled for Hallrek and draft runners. Hallrek saw that Kaisys had absorbed pretty much everything about canines that his father had let slip - and some things that hadn't been formally or intentionally taught - and pulled a few strings to get him back with canines as soon as possible. He walked the tables (so to speak; the beastcraft is known for being a little wide-ranging) when he was nearly seventeen, but first he found a green firelizard clutch while visiting home. He was out with his youngest full sister, Ninera, who was also following in their father's footsteps. The two youngsters had planned on Impressing the entire five-egg clutch between them, but only two eggs hatched: a blue for Kaisys and a green for Ninera.
Life continued for Kaisys. He returned to Kaligi with his journeyman's knots and was rewarded with two pups to train, the start of his own line. He named them Chell and Guara, and their training was up to his father's standards. When he turned eighteen, Kaininer sent him out advertising, so to speak. He'd head to a hold with one or both of his dogs, and sometimes some of his father's, and show how useful they could be. Some of the more conservative communities didn't respond so well to his colourful energy, but conservative communities are rather few and far between in the south. He picked up a training gig at Arnus, not actually with canines so much as firelizards (but it was well-paying and he wanted a break from travelling for a while). He'd teach the guards' lizards to track down a person, whether for smuggling or theft or some other crime, and sometimes he'd get a bonus from them personally. There were drawbacks to staying at home or travelling every night.
Kaisys listened very carefully when word of the Weyr's lockdown spread. It didn't take long for everyone to know something and have an opinion. That was how things worked. Kai, though, saw an opportunity for more than gossip. He worked his way towards the Weyr, trying to arrive just when the lockdown was lifted. He succeeded, and now has plans to sell guard dogs and the training of watchbeasts to the undoubtedly paranoid Weyr. Fears of a poisoner? Well, a canine can certainly be trained to follow the scent of an herb!
Pets
Name: Sheft
Species: Firelizard
Gender: Blue
Age: 5
Color: Blue
Physical Appearance: Blue like the autumn sky as the sun dips to a distant horizon, Sheft is of average size and build for a blue firelizard. His wings are splattered and dappled along the trailing edge with turquoise, nearer to a summer afternoon than an autumn evening, as are his hindquarters and tail. The final third of his tail becomes entirely light blue as the splattering grows denser; this happens on his hind legs as well, but only the tips of his toes are solid. Otherwise, Sheft is simply a firelizard, with a blue firelizard's lean build and proportions.
Personality: Whatever a demonic monster Sheft would have been without proper guidance, he isn't it now. He has been his owner's training project since the day he hatched (and, in some ways since the day Kaisys found the clutch with his sisters), and it shows. He is a polite little bugger and is always paying attention to his owner. He doesn't steal food or shiny bits of nothing, and whenever he's off with other firelizards he frequently checks in with his owner without being obnoxious. Moreover, he is calm and quiet, though Kai laughingly admits that Sheft tends to turn into a vicious squeaking monster when a green or gold rises nearby.
Note: Chell and Guara do not stay with Kaisys but are housed in the stables with those runners currently in the Weyr.
Name: Chell
Species: Canine
Gender: Male
Age: 3
Color: Black
Physical Appearance: Very large dogs, Chell and Guara are of a line of multi-purpose beasts. Both have a thick coat of guard-hairs but no undercoat, loosely curling tails, and half-erect ears. Chell is the taller and the heavier, weighing some 120 pounds and reaching mid-thigh on an average person at the shoulder. Chell has a small grey spot on his chest, several white whiskers on his left side, and a few individual grey hairs sprouting from the tip of his coarse tail. His chest is considerably deeper than Guara's, tucking up distinctly to the long, firm loin. Both are long-legged with large feet and webbed toes, as well as possessed of soft, short-haired faces with clear stops and some jowls.
Personality: Chell is an absolute softie when it comes to kids. An excellent guardian of pretty much anything, he can be trusted to fend off anything in his nasty book and not munch on the guarded in the meantime. To Chell, if he hasn't been taught that something is to be defended against, it's something good and he automatically goes into mushy mode. Considering his size, that's not always the best thing, and since he generalizes where most canines can't, he doesn't do much good as a guard against humans. Still, at a mere three Turns he already has a number of puppies pre-claimed by rural holdings, and the four he has sired so far are looking to be much the same as their sire: giant, fluffy, and easily trained.
Name: Guara [GWARA]
Species: Canine
Gender: Female
Age: 3
Color: Black
Physical Appearance: Very large dogs, Chell and Guara are both of a wide line of multi-purpose beasts. Both have a thick coat of guard-hairs but no undercoat, loosely curling tails, and half-erect ears. Guara is smaller than Chell by about an inch at the shoulder and weighs closer to 100 pounds. Unlike Chell, Guara is entirely black from nose to tail, with darker brown eyes. Guara's chest is shallower but broader than Chell's, with a smoother transition from barrel to loin. Both are long-legged with large feet and webbed toes, as well as possessed of soft, short-haired faces with clear stops and some jowls.
Personality: Guara is far more aloof than Chell. She is from the far spectrum of Kaligian canines, and must be formally introduced to a person before permitting them past. Her sire has spent his entire life guarding Arnus Hold, though he is far from the only protector there. Guara is competent at many tasks, though she never shows any enthusiasm at any of them except fishing. Yes, fishing. Guara knows how to spot a fish from a rock or dock, lunge into the water, and catch it. She's pretty good at it too. She can also pull appropriately sized carts, dig out stumps, track felines (although she has never met a live one) or humans, help bring in a herd, or fetch random items she knows the name of. Her disgust at such tasks is always evident.
For Candidates:
Elided name: K'sys
What color does the character want/not want?: Honestly? Not a clue. He's not at Alietran to become a dragonrider.
What color do YOU want/not want for this character?: He feels blue-ish to me, but I don't mind anything ^_^
Do you care if the character impresses cross-gender?: Go ahead!
Are you okay with your candidate being mauled; if so, how much?: Nothing really debilitating, but some scarring is fine.
Is this a stands candidate?: Yes; he figures the whole poisoner thing might make the Weyr willing to get a few guard dogs. Preferably from him. And trained by him. And handled by him. So he really isn't an official candidate, or an IC-candidate at all. I just plot behind his back.
Any other traits (physical or personality-wise) you'd like to see/not see with your dragon?: If they can't stand dogs, he will cry. Please, no dog-haters! Or at least permanent dog-haters.
