Kaisys examined himself in his little mirror. It wasn't an expensive one, but then expensive things tended to break while travelling. It did well enough, his chunk of polished metal. After all, it showed him that there wasn't any more mud in his hair - one never got too far from mud this time of year - and that his shirt, a rich red one with all the loose qualities he loved, was not marred by any either. Just because he loved a job that involved dirt didn't mean that he had to be dirty the rest of the time. He set down the mirror, gave one sleeve a twitch to set it into place, and called Sheft to his arm.
They left together and it wasn't long before they reached the dining hall. At his owner's soft command, the blue firelizard sprang into the air, hovered a moment, and then glided higher on silent wings. Sheft slowly circled the crowded room, occasionally dropping a few feet lower to investigate a potential spot before rising again. He never approached any of the diners, but eventually he had to return unsuccessfully. There wasn't really any open space around. Kai shrugged and reassured the firelizard. "Go catch the rest of the sun," he murmured, and watched Sheft happily blink between, keeping far enough away to keep anyone from feeling his chill backwash. Kaisys wove his way through the crowd to the display of food, briefly wondered if its limitation was due only to the number of people or if the poisoning bit had had anything to do with it, and then shrugged off the thought and filled a plate.
He balanced it with one hand as he continued on through the crowd. He'd figured that he'd just wander around until someone left and he could snag a seat. In the meantime, he was hungry, so he flicked a thin slice of meat from his plate into his move. Hm. A little bland, but then the cooks might be wary of strong, potentially poison-obscuring flavours for a while. Entirely understandable. No doubt they might be a little worried of coming under suspicion. Still, the food was good.
Aha! An empty seat. He deftly made his way over and slid his plate down before anyone could snag it. "I hope no one minds me sliding in?" he asked lightly. "It's one thing to eat on the go, but when there are chairs available, why go to the bother?" Now that he had both hands, he was able to tear his bun in half and listen to in crumble. And it was still wonderfully warm! They might be staying their spice-hands a little, but they certainly weren't holding back on sheer cooking quality. He bit into one of the pieces with open delight.
