Name: Berengar
Gender: Male
Age: 19
Birthdate (Season): Winter
Location: Alietran Weyr
Rank: Candidate
Wing (if applicable): N/A
Family: Father-Lord Holder Kalgar of Southern Hold
Mother-Drudge, deceased
Sister-Kolyka, of gold Eynalth (deceased)
Two other half-siblings, no full siblings
Physical Appearance: Berengar is tall, just a little under six feet, and quite burly and well-muscled. He's used to hard work, and it shows. He's otherwise pretty average in appearance with no particularly striking features. His eyes are a bit narrow and deep brown in color, and his skin is rather dark and tans infequently. His hair is jet black and cut short. He plans to be a rider, and short hair fits better under a helmet, after all. It's too short to be anything but straight, really, but it doesn't hold much of a curl anyway.
Personality: Berengar is fairly friendly and outgoing, but he has a short temper and gets into a lot of arguments, so he finds it a bit difficult to keep friends once he's made them. He likes to flirt with girls a lot, despite the fact that as a candidate, that sort of thing is discouraged, and he can be quite shameless about it. Perhaps it's because he's already stood so many times before and most think he's just not cut out for Impression, but he rarely gets in trouble for it. Well, at least not by the Candidatemaster--he's been caught cheating on one girl with another more than once, but he isn't the sort to ever settle down with one weyrmate.
He is very intelligent and clever, but when it comes to empathy, he can be a bit slow to pick up on what others are thinking and tends to come off as cold and detached. He doesn't mind this too much; he enjoys having some time to himself as well, and he has a keen interest in medicinal herbs and healing in general. He can be rather selfish, and given his upbringing, usually takes care of himself first and tries not to get attached to people. He has been bitterly disappointed in the past, having stood for three clutches already without Impressing, but he is determined to succeed.
History: The son of a lowly drudge in Southern Hold, Berengar is actually the illegitimate son of the Lord Holder, though this has never been acknowledged. He was told nonetheless by his mother as a young child, though his father did nothing but use and abuse his mother and ignored Berengar. Perhaps he wasn't even sure the boy was his; Berengar has never asked him about it--the Lord Holder has a perfectly lovely family with perfectly legitimate children, so why would he care about a drudge's bastard. Still, Berengar never quite forgave his father for his treatment of him.
His mother died from an illness when he was eight turns old, and after that he was taken in by foster parents. He often spent time helping his foster father in the nearby forests, and it wasn't long before he knew as much as any holder about useful herbs and medicine. He wanted more, though, so his foster parents started thinking about sending him to the Healer Hall as an apprentice. Before they could, however, searchriders came from Alietran Weyr. While Southern Weyr had no clutch on the sands and wouldn't for some time, Alietran's Senior Queen had laid a queen egg and candidates were needed, so Southern had allowed its sister Weyr to search in their Holds. Though Berengar was only twelve turns old, he was just old enough to stand as a candidate. Having been infatuated with dragons as a child, he eagerly accepted.
He had no family in the stands to watch him Impress--or so he thought. Once he stepped onto the sands and joined the rest of the candidates, he looked up and saw that the Lord Holder, his father, had been invited, and had brought his children along as well. The old bitterness filled Berengar as the eggs started to hatch, and perhaps that was the reason none of them seemed to notice him.
Then Sirith's golden egg started to crack, and things went from bad to worse. The gold hatchling ignored the candidates who had been gathered specifically for her and instead went straight to the stands, not stopping until she came to her rider--the daughter of Southern's Lord, and Berengar's half-sister. Kolyka was only two turns older than Berengar, at fourteen turns, and in the wake of the hatching, many said she was too young and too inexperienced to be a junior weyrwoman. Berengar, having long ago transferred his bitterness about his father to his siblings as well, did nothing to stop the rumors. He nevertheless left the sands without a bond.
Though he never drew attention to himself when Kolyka was around, she nonetheless recognized him as one of the drudges' children from her own hold, and with a bit of luck, the goldrider discovered he was her brother. Far from the reaction he had expected, she welcomed him and even managed to get him a fire lizard egg as gift. He gladly accepted it, but he never really warmed up to her.
Three turns later, Eynalth rose for the first time, and with the barely-seventeen-turn-old Kolyka a nervous wreck, the flight was very nearly a disaster. After a premature end to the flight, Eynalth was caught by a brown, and the whispers about Kolyka's abilities grew stronger. To make matters worse, a month after Sirith rose in her own flight, the Senior Weyrwoman passed away and Sirith went between in grief with a belly full of eggs that would never be laid.
Though Berengar stood for Eynalth's clutch, he once again failed to Impress, and Kolyka's reassurances did nothing to help him. The mutters against Kolyka grew worse as she took leadership as Senior Weyrwoman, and Berengar heard them all. When he heard that the Weyrwoman had passed away, he felt...nothing. Just numb. He stood for Eynalth's last clutch as well, but though there were a few times when he thought he was finally going to Impress, he once again left the sands alone. Once he realized Alietran was now without a queen, he was seriously afraid the chance to Impress had slipped through his fingers, but then L'cal announced his plan to have greens clutch, and all was right again. Some may not have cared to Impress one of the undoubtedly smaller dragons that would come from a green's clutch, but Berengar didn't care, as long as he finally got his dragon. For two turns now, he's been waiting patiently for the greens to mature, but now his wait is nearly over.
