Aysel was used to being up late at night; it wasn't long ago that Dusanth was waking her up at all hours to be fed, or if not fed, oiled, and before that, she had often spent her nights following her father and his wher on their duties. Late-night events were nothing new to her. Therefore, when Dusanth abruptly left her weyr with a terse word or three that the eggs were coming, Aysel was awake and present to note. The grey left in obvious discomfort before Aysel could even think of accompanying her, but she didn't mind the walk to the Hatching Sands.
Dusanth looked up quickly from her business of laying eggs when her rider arrived, grumbling a welcome. What's that? she asked, seeing the girl had something in her hands.
The object in her hand was a small bouquet of dried, yellow poppy flowers. "For luck. Hopefully the drying process won't hurt the luck, but they weren't going to survive very long in here otherwise."
Dusanth crooned happily. How sweet. Oh! she said, before she was interrupted by another egg. Aysel waited patiently beside her dragon, offering a comforting hand, until the grey was finished clutching. Since it was Dusanth's first, neither of them were quite sure what to expect, but when all the eggs had been laid, Aysel was nonetheless pleasantly surprised at the size of the clutch.
Fifteen eggs were nestled in sands, sitting in piles of three or four. One group of four in the center all showed the iridescent sheen that often accompanied jeweltoned hatchlings, and Aysel smiled. "I could be wrong, but this looks like a pretty promising start for your first clutch, Dusanth."
The grey rumbled, pleased at the compliment, and curled around her clutch, moving awkwardly trying to find a comfortable position. You should probably let the others know that the eggs are here, she pointed out.
Aysel bit back a smile. "It might be better to wait until tomorrow. They wouldn't like being woken up."
