Sitka, I'm bored, Wapitith whined in her most childish voice. It was raining too hard outside for the green to leave her weyr, and that always made Wapitith edgy. At least the Hatching Sands were warm and protected, Sitka thought. That was particularly good, because judging by the way Wapitith's belly had exploded over the past month, they would likely be needing them very soon.
She sighed as she looked up from her work. Unfortunately, the prior recordkeepers had never seen fit to keep a proper record of fire lizard clutches the same way they did with the dragons, and Sitka was coming to regret that. Though still less than ideal, fire lizards were the best way to get an idea of what would come from Wapitith's clutch before it hatched. So far, though, she had had little luck.
It's uncomfortable here, too, though not as uncomfortable as my weyr. Everything's uncomfortable, but not for much longer, Wapitith continued to grumble, and once Sitka actually processed what her green had said, she sat up.
"Shells," she muttered as she stood to her feet. Wapitith, are you in the Hatching Sands?
Yes?
Sitka swore again and ran as fast as her feet would take her, pitying anyone who got in her way. Her green was clutching, and in her typical flighty fashion, had neglected to tell anyone. By the time she stepped onto the hatching sands, there was already one pale, glistening egg deposited on the sand, and Wapitith was fidgeting irritably as she attempted to lay a second.
It was another hour before rider and dragon were sure there were no more eggs coming, and even though she should not have expected more, Sitka was still a little disappointed at the size of the clutch. Five glistening eggs lay in the warm sand, four of them no larger than the smallest eggs of a queen's clutch, no doubt holding blues and greens. At least the other egg was quite a bit larger, and though Sitka had only seen one other clutch to compare it to, she thought there might be a brown or a bronze inside it. Unfortunately, despite its yellow-gold shell, it was definitely not a queen egg, though.
She went to her dragon's head, smiling. "You did wonderfully, Love," she said, stroking the headknobs fondly.
Did I? Wapitith's eyes whirled proud with blues and greens, and she stretched her wings. I feel much better now. Also, I think the rain has started to let up a bit. Can we go play in the lake?
Sitka fought back a sigh as her palm met her forehead. This was why a green was no substitute for a gold. "No dear, I think you should make sure your eggs are alright and settled in properly first, don't you think? Also, we should probably tell the rest of the Weyr so they can come and see your eggs as well, hmm?"
Oh, alright... Wapitith sounded a bit petulant, but obeyed her rider. She started nosing the eggs around in no pattern that Sitka could make out, but eventually the large orangish egg ended up in the middle of the clutch, and Wapitith slumped down on the sands again. Attention everyone! The green alerted the rest of the Weyr with a bugle. I have eggs! Come see them!
The Grimm Tales Clutch
1. Magic Mirror Egg
This egg is as smooth and shiny as a mirror. Completely white with just a hint of a bluish-green shade, it appears to nearly glow next to the rest of the eggs. Its surface is completely smooth and a bit cool to the touch, and the egg gives off a feeling of cool disdain.
2. Shuddering Egg
This egg is a light blue with hints of cyan. It is also liberally speckled with yellow spots of color. It's one of the smaller eggs and is easily overshadowed by its larger neighbors, but the egg seems to twitch a lot more than the others, as though the dragon inside is impatient to get out. As soon as it is touched, however, it settles down and goes silent.
3. Juniper Tree Egg
This egg is a dark green-blue color, and middling in size. It has a silvery sheen to the shell and the only marking is a large irregular blotch of red near the top of the shell. It doesn't respond much to touch, only occasionally emanating a faint sense of grief.
4. Silent Secret Egg
Clearly the largest egg in the clutch, this egg is a striking red-orange color. It's nearly yellow near the bottom of the shell and gradually fades to a deep red color at the top. There's a shiny iridescence on the shell as well; it almost seems to change color whenever the light hits it. The egg is calm and quiet, but exudes a sense of friendly curiosity when touched.
5. Glass Slipper Egg
This egg is a deep blue that's nearly black, and nearly solid in color. The shell has a few streaks of a lighter forest green, but otherwise it doesn't really stand out in any way. This egg seems unimpressed with everything around it, and rarely responds to anyone who touches it. When it does react, it seems to want to push everyone away and be left by itself.
